Apple is an amazing company
**TL;DR:** Apple replaced my 2.5 year old MacBook with a brand new 2017 model after repeated keyboard issues.
In December of 2015 I bought a first generation MacBook – specifically the 512GB version with a 1.2 GHz processor. The computer served me pretty well until about a week before my Apple Care was due to expire, when I experienced my first keyboard issue. Specifically, the spacebar would get stuck and become non-responsive. I brought it in, was told that my top case would need to be replaced, and wisely purchased Apple Care.
In the 16 months since that first top case replacement, I’d had to bring it back in three more times. The second time, it required a second replacement. The third, they were able to repair it without replacement, but I had to bring it in again today. I was once again told that a replacement was necessary, which considerably concerned me, because it’s the same issue *another* time with now only about 8 months left on my warranty. I expressed this concern when the genius rep told me they had to set up another replacement. He went into the back to get that started, leaving me with a sinking feeling in my stomach – each time they had to do this replacement, it cost something like $800, which was fortunately covered by Apple Care.
To my surprise, the genius rep came back out and told me they were replacing the laptop with a new one. They then produced a 2017 model with an i5 processor – a dramatic improvement from the 2015 version. The best news – a second generation keyboard and three more years of Apple Care.
They certainly didn’t have to do that. They could have replaced my top case *again* and maybe it would have lasted, or maybe I would’ve been back in there some time after the warranty expired. To me, this is an amazing, surprising resolution. I basically walked in with a failing 2015 laptop, and walked out with a new laptop that would’ve cost me $2300 (the price in Canada).
I somehow doubt that most companies would do something like this. Yet another example of how Apple is amazing.
