If you’re hesitated between buying the ipad pro or the ipad 2018, read this.
After long hesitation I finally bought my 2018 ipad, here’s my reasons and review.
First, I want to thank everyone here on this sub for their help and fast response. I wish this post may help other hesitating people like this community helped me.
Now a short intro: I’m a 36 years old physician and I’m preparing for a big exam in Europe after less than a year. I wanted to go paperless because I had to study on the go. Carrying several textbooks and notebooks was not practical at all. I had an ipad air 2 16gb LTE but since I am a slow typist, I decided to get an ipad with pencil support for heavy note taking and writing summaries. As many members here I was really hesitated between the ipad pro 10.5 and the ipad 2018.
I had the chance to try the two tablets and the apple pencil in different showrooms in my city. I did this for several days. Each time I was experimenting a feature or two. I recommend everyone to do the same, try them yourself because you are the best judge.
Screen size: as I said I wanted to study on the go. the bulky 12.9 ipad pro was not an option. I couldn’t use the split screen on the ipad pro 10.5, it was really cramped. However reading on 10.5 was a really easy, no need to zoom in or turn it to landscape mode. I came from ipad air 2 so I didn’t feel problem with 2018 ipad although like I said ipad pro is very luxurious.
The multi-laminated screen and the air gap: You will ONLY notice the gap if you put them side to side. Will it affect your work? For note taking: NO, at all. Your muscle memory will guide your hand and fingers, you are not a child that is learning to write for the first time. For architectural drawing and any kind of drawing that requires precision: YES, it will affect you. You will find small gaps everywhere in your drawings unless you zoom in while drawing to minimize the error.
The anti reflective coating: yes it matters if you will take it outdoors in the sun. For indoor users like myself, I didn’t feel any problem. REMEMBER: matte screen protectors will shorten the life span of the pencil tip.
The processing power and the RAM: I had the chance to play PUBG mobile on the highest settings. No problem at all in both tablets. However, from several youtube videos and different people commenting in this sub: if you need the tablet for pure graphic and video editing, I’m very sure that you will need the extra RAM sooner or later.
The sound: really bad on the 2018 ipad. Again since I will use it for studying only, I have no problem. Choose according to your needs.
The camera: I never used the camera on my ipad air 2 to scan any document so the choice was easy for me. I just don’t like to pay for an extra feature that I won’t use. However, if you’re going to scan different documents, schematics or blueprints, you should choose the ipad pro.
I wish I helped you. Good luck everyone.
