Here’s my take on why Apple should give the option to permanently disable the notification that tells you you’re on Do Not Disturb
I’ve done a search on this subreddit for complaints about the DND banner showing up multiple times per day. There have been a few posts but none of them that I saw summarized exactly why I think a permanent disable option should exist.
Since as long as I have known about DND, I have had it on at all times. I used to find myself having quite a bit of anxiety while texting people. If I was talking with a girl, I’d find myself not able to focus in class while attending college or during work. I would be constantly aware that my phone *wasn’t* buzzing because that meant that she *hadn’t* responded back. And when she did, I would check it immediately. Don’t judge, I was young and insecure. In college before I knew about DND, I decided to completely turn my phone on silence. The idea that my phone not buzzing *didn’t* necessarily mean that people weren’t texting me brought me a lot of peace and I was able to get through long periods of time without checking my phone. It was great. The only thing I wished at the time was that I would know if someone called me.
I rarely got calls, so if someone was calling me, it was likely more urgent or important than a text that I could get back to at another point. When I found out about DND, it was the perfect option. I could set it to only buzz or ring if there was a call.
I’m now married and have grown up a bit. So I don’t run into the anxiety issue. But I’m so used to no notifications and simply prefer it. Family group texts drive me nuts as it is. I understand I can put DND on specific convos but new ones get created from time to time. Plus I don’t want to have to go through all of them and put that setting on. I just want it to be on for everything except calls.
The idea that I have to clear it off my screen multiple times per day is stupid. For those of you that think this is petty, fine. Maybe it is. But think about this situation: due to the limited real estate at the top of the X, they decided to take out your battery percentage instead. Some people complained and then because of them, Apple had the audacity of putting a banner on your lock screen multiple times per day showing you your battery percentage. Doesn’t that just sound stupid, especially if there was no way to completely disable it?
I know this is such a simple fix for Apple. Just add an option for those of us who care!
