MacBook Pro with Touch Bar users – how are you using the Touch Bar?
As I’m sure most of you know, you can use BetterTouchTool to customize your Touch Bar pretty much anyway you want.
* I set up my “~” (unshifted) key to be my Escape key.
* tapping my “fn” key switches between my BetterTouchTool Touch Bar set up and the built-in Touch Bar settings for each app designed by the app makers (although I use my own set up nearly 100% of the time).
My Main Set Up:
I designed this set up to make it blend into the keyboard. It really does look like an extension of the keyboard when you see it in person.
circle – decrease screen brightness
sun – increase brightness
gear – toggle dark mode
light bulb – turn off display
notepad – show/hide Notes app
checkmark – show/hide Things 3 app
telescope – show/hide Dictionary app
star – show/hide Chrome (used for YouTube)
compass – show/hide Safari
music note – show/hide Spotify
previous/play/next – straightforward
bell – toggle mute
left arrow – decrease volume
right arrow – increase volume
[unseen] two-finger swipe left – decrease keyboard brightness
[unseen] two-finger swipe right – increase keyboard brightness
For some apps, I have a custom set up. For example, here is my set up for the Reeder 3 app:
Pocket – send article to Pocket
Reader – show full article
Light – light reader mode
Dark – dark reader mode (these are necessary because Reader 3 isn’t compatible with Dark Mode)
I find the Touch Bar is annoying at first, but if you get a good handle on how you want to use it, it can be at least modestly useful.
How are you guys using the Touch Bar?
