Accidental 3D Touch in iPad Pro
So I think I might have inadvertently stumbled on to what the future of 3D Touch may end up being. I have been setting up my new iPad Pro which obviously doesn’t have 3D Touch and I noticed that the lag time between touching an icon and going to jiggly mode was longer than it was on my iPhone. I didn’t really pay much attention until I was moving icons around and noticed that on some icons, the ones that have access to the Files app, I would get a pop up (just like 3D touching an app icon) before it would go to jiggly mode. I made a screen capture to show what I am attempting to explain.
In the video, I first long press on the Word App Icon and it goes to the pop up, then I try the Excel App icon (it doesn’t work) and then I try the Files app icon and it does give the pop up.
I am not sure if this is a bug or feature or half baked feature but I think this would be a pretty great solution if and when Apple removes 3D Touch from the remainder of the lineup and a way for them to finally bring 3D Touch capability to the iPad. This could work at least for accessing hidden menus/widgets in the app icons because it wouldn’t force users to learn a new user action and wouldn’t really displace an existing action. It would simply sit between a pre-existing action that everybody knows. In fact, it would bring more visibility to the feature which I think it desperately needs.
I am really hoping this is a sign of things to come either in iOS 12 or iOS 13
