FaceID has ruined the iPad for me
So overall I like this new iPad (except the usual complaints like all apps having enormous black bars) but faceID is godawful and its making me hate the whole device.
I get the concept on an iPhone – whenever you use a phone, it’s in front of your face. So you might as well make the face unlock it. But that isn’t how I use my iPad – normally I’m sitting in my chair and the iPad is flat on my desk and it beeps to say I’ve got an email so I reach over and touch it to check. But my face (under normal usage) will never be directly above the iPad, so it isn’t going to unlock. So I now have to pick up my iPad (which is incredibly heavy compared to a phone – I have the 12.9 model so about 5x the weight)) and point it at myself. Whereas before I’d just stretch my arm and touch the home button. Its now such an effort that I find myself usually just typing in my 6 digit passcode while the iPad is lying down, rather than going through the effort of picking it up, pointing, and hoping that faceID works.
I don’t understand why such a terrible and unsuited feature would be put into a product. I love faceID on my iPhone since its pointed at my face whenever I use it, but that just isn’t how iPads work. The 12.9 size is far far too heavy to be picking it up and waving it around.
Does anyone else feel this way? Because honestly, this issue (combined with then huge black borders) is making me want to return my iPad and swap it for my old 2017 model.
