What is everyone’s opinion of Apple Music being free on many cell carriers now?
I just found out that my Verizon plan includes free Apple Music, so I went ahead and signed up for it even though I’d never been interested before. I guess it’ll be nice being able to cue up songs via Siri on the occasions when I don’t feel like bothering navigating through Spotify. But I’m a little concerned about the monopolistic issues this presents. I’m not personally planning to cancel Spotify anytime soon but I have a feeling a lot of people will, even more if Apple presents a tool to copy people’s Spotify favorites and saves to AM. My reason for refraining from AM in the past was always more about the market implications than about the product itself, although I am very happy with Spotify’s product and found the AM app frustrating enough to delete it altogether after finding it no longer a good way to navigate my very expensive iTunes library. I see already that they’ve made a few small improvements to the AM app since iOS 10, such as bringing back an easy way to go from track to album or artist.
Anyway, this makes me intangibly uncomfortable and I’m wondering if I’m alone in this sentiment. I like the idea of consumer choice and fear that this carrier bundling is going to have the net effect of collapsing industries back into monopolies or oligopolies.
Is Spotify doomed?
