When you’re called poor for not having an iPhone, it opens your eyes a bit.
I’ve been giving it some thought, and I’ll admit I shouldn’t have gotten so worked up over what one stranger said about me. But, the terrible remark got me thinking, about how… cold wealth and material possessions makes people, and how it can divide us just as much as it can bring us together.
I don’t care if you want to buy the latest phone, and I don’t care if you want to flaunt your wealth. But I’ve come to believe that money creates this huge disconnect between people. Really, if the topic I brought up that day had nothing to do about money, that person would’ve never said that to me.
But it’s the fact that they had no qualms looking down upon a stranger, a stranger they knew nothing about, just because I didn’t see things the same way they did, that saddens me. I’m not even that offended or angered by it anymore. I’m just saddened.
I’m saddened that that person’s love of electronics made him spout such an awful remark, and the fact he has no remorse for what he said, and likely doesn’t even remember it, makes it worse. You can get away with it because it’s the Internet, but imagine if this were real life.
You wouldn’t be able to get away with it, then, would you? Especially since there are people who wouldn’t let that happen.
I know not every person on this subreddit, this site, and the Internet isn’t like this one person. But it’s people like this who make this place more difficult than it should be. And this place would be better off without them. If I had the power, I’d get rid of him myself, but I don’t.
So I guess the best thing I can do is move on from that person, and starting focusing on myself. At the end of the day, money is an important thing, and you do need it to exist in this world…
But it doesn’t rule the world. It’ll never rule the world. Not in my eyes, anyway. And I’ll admit I understand why these phones are so highly priced, considering the things that go into them. But, if you can’t accept the fact that not everybody’s lucky as you and can’t afford every new device that’s released…
Then I don’t know what to tell you, because that says a whole lot more about you than it does about me. And, for now, that’s all I’ve got to say. I do have genuine questions about the Apple company and its products, so don’t expect long-winded posts like this from me all the time.
But that’s all I’ve got to say on the matter for the time being.
