Let’s talk about USB-C on iPhone 11
Hello. As a lot of us know their have been many rumors regarding USB-C replacing lightning on iPhone 11. From what I understand many people are excited. I am not. I am making this post to explain the downsides of USB-C replacing lightning on the iPhone.
1. Compatibility with all the accessories you have invested in over the years.
When the iPhone 5 introduced the lightning connection port everything changed. All former accessories no longer worked. So from that point on iPhone users replaced all of their old accessories with lighting compatible ones. Myself and many of you have invested a lot of money into lighting compatible accessories we use every day. Any pair of lighting headphones will no longer work. Your super expensive iPhone dock won’t work. All of your chargers you bought including the expensive keychain one from Native Union: Not compatible. So enjoy spending hundreds of dollars replacing all of those accessories when the iPhone ships with USB-C.
2. The industry is not ready yet.
When Apple introduced USB-C on the MacBook people were mad. There were not enough USB-C compatible products on the market. If you wanted a USB-C flash drive that would work with your new MacBook, it would most likely not work with any other computer. So you had to buy more adapters. While this is a pain it’s bearable as their is more room for docks and adapters in a MacBook. However there is not on an iPhone. You hate the headphone jack adapter? Think about x20 the headache.
3. Ease it in.
Remember when the MacBook Air came out? Remember how people were infuriated that Apple removed the optical disk drive. Steve Jobs new that optical disk drives were going to become obsolete in the future and wanted to help speed that along (like flash). But Steve Jobs did NOT remove it on the Pro series. Instead, he waited for the industry to adapt before removing it on the flagship product. Today Apple needs to be patient with USB-C adoption. They were doing good so far starting with the MacBook and then the iPad. But adding it to the iPhone this year is NOT easing it in. They need to put time between adding USB-C to the iPad and adding it to their flagship product.
