The new iPhone and AirPods will support bidirectional wireless charging, but still won’t have USB-C. This is almost as dumb as charging the original Apple Pencil or the Magic Mouse.
The main thing holding back wireless charging is not that you can’t charge all your devices on one pad. Or that it’s heinously inefficient. It’s that you can’t use the devices while they’re being charged.
Oh! My AirPods are dead and so is the case? Let me just hold the case against the back of my phone for an hour to give it 10% charge! Oh, and if you move it 1cm in any direction it stops charging.
If the new iPhone and AirPods supported USB-C I would buy both on launch day. I dream of the day I can just bring one power brick and one USB-C cable for my MacBook, iPad Pro, iPhone, AirPods, Nintendo Switch and noise canceling headphones when traveling.
In fact, Anker is releasing a 100W brick with two USB-C PD ports this year, so I’d get one of those and two cables.
