iPhone X Trade In Value vs Out of Warranty Replacement Cost
I went into the Apple Store today to get my iPhone X looked at – FaceID stopped working about 3 days ago and there is condensation in the front and rear cameras. The kicker is that diagnostics returned no water damage on the phone, so the Genius at Apple recommended I just hold on to it without FaceID at the risk of the condensed water causing problems down the line. The alternatives would be trade in or replacement.
Here’s the fun part: a replacement iPhone X 64GB costs $549 + applicable tax, but the trade-in value is $500. Since the problem I have with the phone doesn’t affect trade-in value, they were willing to give me the full value. This means I could trade it in and buy an iPhone XS 64GB for $500 + tax (on $1000).
In order to prevent my phone’s internals from corroding on me and having my phone dying on me (and thereby reduce it’s trade in value), I’m probably just going to trade it in and get a newer model phone for less (?) than getting the same one replaced, which makes no sense.
