Advice for purchasing used Apple products from B&H or any other authorized reseller.
I like to buy a lot of my electronics from B&H online because they don’t charge tax in my state, and they’ve always been pretty good service wise, but recently I had a slight issue with my iPad purchase.
B&H had a great deal on a used 512gb 12.9 2018 iPad Pro that I couldn’t pass up. It was $1079 with no tax, so I was saving almost $400. The condition was 9/10 so I figured it was a little scratch on the casing or something, which doesn’t bother me. When I got it though, it was in perfect condition, not even fingerprints, I was really surprised. Then I turned it on, and realized B&H sold me an iCloud locked device. Someone owned it before, and did’nt log out of iCloud when they returned it. I was super bummed and thought I would need to return it.
I decided to call Apple to see if they could do anything, and found out that if you purchased a device from and authorized Apple reseller (with proof of receipt) that was iCloud locked and that device was not in lost mode, they can unlock it. So I visited my local Apple store and sure enough, they we’re able to unlock because it was never put in lost mode. I was even able to purchase AppleCare+ because it was within the eligible time frame.
So, hopefully my experience helps someone else in a similar situation. I didn’t realize Apple could unlock the device in my scenario. It was a hassle, but at least I got a pretty good deal not counting my time wasted.
