How much will the (RED) iPhone XR contribute to the Global Fund ?
The iPhone is by far the most sold Apple product, and the XR is the most sold iPhone. So it was a big deal when Apple decided to offer their most popular phone in (RED) on day one (instead of 6 month later for previous years). So I’m wondering :
**How much of an impact it will have for the Global Fund ?**
I’ve looked it up to come up with a rough estimate and found a staggering amount : unfortunately, Apple doesn’t disclose the donated amount anymore, but they used to in the past. From this, we can see they used to donate between 5 and 10% of the retail price. So, that would be around 37$ for an iPhone XR. But to be more conservative, let’s say they donate 15$ (which is the amount they’ve donated in the past for iPod Nanos). Now Apple sells roughly 200 million phones a year. Let’s say a third of those are iPhone XR, and a fifth of those are red. That would amount to 13 million devices. We get to an estimate of roughly 200 million dollars to be donated to the Global Fund this year alone. To put that number in perspective, over the course of 13 years, Apple has donated around 200 million dollars so far.
So what’s your take ? Do you think my estimate is way off ?
