[PSA] iOS 12.2 has Fullscreen API (custom HTML5 video player) on by default in Safari
Just a reminder though this was not in the release notes, Safari in iOS 12.2 has Fullscreen API on permanently and cannot be turned off unlike the previous versions of iOS 12.
Now before you ask what Fullscreen API is, it’s an experimental feature introduced in iOS 12 which lets developers use a custom HTML5 video player instead of the native iOS video player when using Safari. Of course there are more interesting things you can do with the Fullscreen API feature but that is beyond my level of expertise if I want to explain that feature fully.
According to some users, this feature was buggy as the custom video player would interfere with the home bar on both the iPhone X/XS/XR models and the 3rd generation iPad Pro models. The option to turn off Fullscreen API was present in earlier versions of iOS 12 to revert to the native iOS video player but now that is no longer possible with this update.
If you guys want the ability to use the native iOS video player in Safari, send feedback to Apple before it’s too late.
