TIL Messages on iCloud still keeps local copies of all messages on your device
I was complaining to Apple Support that I keep getting ‘low storage’ warnings on my 64GB iPhone. I showed them how even though I use Messages on iCloud, Messages was taking up a giant 11GB of local storage. Compare that to my 92GB Photos library that is only using 3GB locally.
Support told me that the Messages on iCloud feature only optimizes space by removing large attachments and NOT removing iMessages themselves.
I thought that was pretty crazy. The point of syncing stuff to iCloud is to keep local storage free on our devices. What a waste of a feature.
