DID IT! I bought the 16″ MacBook Pro [i9-9880H – 16GB – 5500M 8GB – 1 TB]
As some of you may recall, last July I ordered and picked-up a 15-inch MacBook Pro to replace my 2013 13-inch MacBook Pro. It was the high-spec stock model (***i9 – 560X – 16GB – 512GB***); but after only 3 days of usage, it turned out to be a less than perfect computer for me.
I really didn’t like the feeling of the keyboard, especially compared to the one fitted on my 2013 MacBook Pro. I hated the touch Escape key (not that I use it very often; but being a touch button I kept pressing it inadvertantly and quitting dialog boxes, Photoshop prompts, Telegram chats and much more). I wasn’t happy with the layout of the arrow keys.
Also, I was disappointed about Apple using a Polaris-based GPU in a 2019 high-end model, while the competitors used the very modern nVidia Turing architecture…
But above them, the very last drop was when on Sunday I had a couple of *T2 crashes* and then the computer refused to boot at all. Maybe, it was due to a defective SSD; but I decided I’ve had enough. So, after a couple of days, I returned it and got a full refund from the Apple Store.
Since the only alternative at that time was the Dell XPS (and as I said earlier my boyfriend owns one and I don’t like it), I was still searching for a replacement. In the meanwhile, Lenovo started selling the 2nd Gen X1 Extreme in Italy in late September; and I was about to buy the Lenovo. But at the same time I was afraid about jumping the ship because there are some features that I really love about the MacBook Pro and the Apple Ecosystem: display with ambient light sensor and auto-brightness, Airdrop, Sidecar with my iPad Pro, Perfect Trackpad, macOS features and intuitivity, etc.
So when the rumors started getting stronger about a 16-inch model, I decided to wait and give Apple the last chance. And it happened; they really did it! It felt like Apple finally listened its customers: we kept asking for a new reliable keyboard, we kept asking for a more reasonable value/money, we kept asking for a longer lasting battery. They really did it buy the book, this time!
So, about 30 minutes after the Press Release, I ordered it!
**CPU**: *Intel i9-9880H (8-core, 2.3 GHz, Turbo Boost up to 4.8 GHz) -* **GPU**: *AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB -* **RAM**: *DDR4 16 GB 2666 Mhz -* **SSD**: *1TB*
And above all, it costs the VERY SAME amount I paid in July for the 15-inch model (which had lower specs)…
I’m really looking forward to test out this computer because it hits all the sweet spots. But at very same time, I am a bit sad; because this new MacBook Pro is the proof that Apple knows perfectly how to build a good priced, powerful, cool (in every way), durable laptop. So I keep asking myself what were they thinking when they released the flawed 2016 and on model…
Anyway, the predicted delivery date is 28th of November; I will update this post with some pictures and benchmarks as soon as it arrives to see if they also managed to solve the overheating problems. And of course I hope the T2 chip won’t cause troubles.
PS: I read that this is going to be 170 grams (0.3 pounds) heavier than the 15-inch; but I don’t care if they give me a longer lasting battery and hopefully a better cooling solution. Also, I usually roam around with my iPad Pro and the keyboard, since iPadOS allows me to plug external drives and access Network Shares and I use Affinity Photo to do a bit of photo editing. I only bring the laptop with me when I have to do heavier duties.
PPS: I also ordered some accessories:
* **AUKEY USB-C Hub** (100 Watt PD – Gigabit – SD Card Reader – USB-A (x3) – HDMI 4K @ 30Hz)
* **USB-C to Lightning cable** for connecting the iPad Pro (Sidecar and Tetheted Mobile Internet)
* **uniCable USB-C to HDMI 4k 60Hz** for connecting it to the TV
* **uniCable USB-C to DisplayPort 4K 60Hz** for connecting it to an external monitor
* **USB-C to USB-C Magnetical Cable** to “replace” the forgotten MagSafe port
* Another original **Apple 96 Watt power supply**: I keep one in the bag and one always under my desk, so I don’t have to unroll the cable everytime.
PPPS: I know that the May/June refresh will have a better front webcam, but I don’t use it at all. I know that the refresh is also going to have the 10-core i9, but it will still be a 14nm CPU; and the 8-core i9 is already an overkill for my needs. I also know that the refresh is going to receive Wi-Fi 6 capabilities since the 10th Gen Intel CPUs support it; but I only own 802.11ac 5GHz stations that already cap my Gigabit Fiber Internet Connectivity. So, right now this 16-inch MacBook Pro fits perfectly my kind of usage.
