iPad mini 5 : laptop & desktop replacement :-)
Since I finished my Masters, I got a job an they gave me a windows laptop so I got rid of my MacBook Pro that I had back then.
The job also supply me with an iPhone 8, which is a nice perk. But I don’t want to use my work-issued Windows laptop for personal use. I like to write short stories, browsing Reddit obviously, reading with the Kindle app, online banking, budgeting with YNAB, editing pictures, chatting with the family, etc. You don’t need a very big rig for that so I decided to grab an iPad Pro 12.9.
Being a minimalist, I also like the simplicity of less devices to manage. So that seemed like a good choice. Really liked the iPad Pro, the screen was massive and gorgeous. Nice to watch movies on. Thing is, I like to use my devices in multiple environment and the iPad Pro isn’t exactly super easy to carry. So I bought a regular iPad. I thought it was still too big to carry and didn’t really like the screen. I think it’s the lamination thing. Also, it’s not as good as my Kindle to read because of the size, too heavy. So I also sold the iPad.
Tried the iPad Mini because why not? I really enjoyed the form factor but it’s pretty small for extended periods of time staring at the screen and trying to do productive things. You can’t have it all and I only want to manage one iPad so I wouldn’t want 2 iPads.
I was watching videos about iPad OS on Youtube and discovered you can now use a mouse in the Accessibility features (also made a shortcut to activate it, tap 3 times on the home button). Found you can now it on your external display and use a keyboard… iPad + mouse + keyboard + display = desktop. So I decided to buy an Apple HDMI to Lightning adaptor and try it for myself with an LG display I had laying around. I really missed sitting down in front of a big screen when I want to write for extended periods of time.
**Verdict**? Thanks to iPadOS, this little device is now a laptop replacement AND a desktop replacement. I can use it in my bed to read Kindle books, on the subway when I transit, at the café, on the couch and also plug it into my monitor to have a desktop replacement, with the mouse and keyboard. Really neat. I found a killer combo here that really works for me!
Also, I got the 256gb but honestly could get away with 64gb so if you have an iCloud account, save some bucks by getting the base version.
**Some caveats :**
– I can’t mirror the image via HDMI if I shut the iPad. So it always have to be opened. I wished it could be pitch black and only using the LG monitor. Maybe there’s a way but I didn’t find it 🙁 (Any ideas?)
– When it’s plugged to the monitor, I have to use the AUX jack to have sound because for some reason I cannot use the iPad speakers. Don’t know why…
Sorry for the wall of text, just wanted to share with you guys 🙂
