iTunes > Catalina’s Music and TV apps
It’s not the final version yet, but the Music and TV applications seem very stripped down. A few things that I’ve really appreciated about iTunes have been lost in the split.
– Being able to view album covers in song view.
– Multiple horizontal selection columns (missing from a few years back).
– No extra artist or album related artwork or information when an album is focused.
The design makes it more difficult to sort through a music library. I don’t understand why they remove features when it would be such a small fraction of their effort to design the best media application period.
IMO, with the release of Catalina, the Mac no longer has a native application for media management, instead, it has applications designed primarily for selling Apple’s subscription services.
With device syncing moved to the Finder, 3rd-party options are more viable now… anyone have any suggestions?
On the topic of media&apps:
With computers as efficient as they are today, I’m curious why the Finder / Files app couldn’t just be rethought as an all-in-one. The Finder would be so much more powerful if it had better sidebar organization, a basic playlist-enabled media player, column options for metadata, and a more powerful metadata editor. I get there’s a status quo and iterations happening, I guess I’m just disappointed that Apple seems to be taking such tiny steps forward and a few steps backward with file management.
