Getting a new iPhone, am I being reasonable?
Hi all, just need a little advice. I want to get a new iPhone after I’ve had my iPhone 6+ for the last 4 years. In the past 6 months it’s had a bit of damage and it’s kind of on it’s last legs.
I’ve done my research and would really like the iPhone XR, specifically the ProductRed 128GB model. It will cost me $1300 AUD.
The only reason why I’m considering spending so much is because I believe the XR will last me another 4 or 5 years, instead of buying an earlier model 7 or 8 and only having it last a year or two. I’m not sure how realistic that is, perhaps a 7 or 8 will last me 4 years, which is why I’m asking you guys.
My partner says it’s too much money for a phone, and something that would break so easily. I plan on mitigating any of that by getting a case and glass screen protector the day I buy it, and of course the phone is waterproof to the extent I need it to be (accidental spillages and dropping in small amounts of water). I don’t need relationship advice, I just need technical advice.
Will the 7, 8, or XR last as long as I want (4-5 years)? Will a glass screen protector minimise screen damage from dropping? Is there anything else I’m not factoring into my decision?
Edit: Thanks to everyone for all your advice. Partner and I have come to a happy compromise where I get the phone I want second hand for under $1000. I’ve found one for now, just with less space than I wanted (64GB instead of 128GB, but moving from 16GB that shouldn’t be much of an issue, I just have an intense dislike of not having enough space) hoping it’s still there when I get it tomorrow, otherwise I can survive long enough to find another. There’s always the chance of negotiating the price down with second hand, so there’s that.
