What is the bare minimum I can do to mount a Linux PC in the Files app?

I have a Linux PC that I’m using to store my files. I was able mount it in the Files app on a Chromebook via sftp and a Linux VM via sshfs by simply giving it the username, password and IP address with no additional configuration outside of setting up SSH and SSHFS. Apparently iPadOS needs something more as opening the ‘Connect to Server’ menu and giving it the same IP address, username and password throws a connection error.
