Unpopular opinion: Apple shouldn’t make the smaller Macbook Pro 14″ (but they should make the screen bigger)

I’ve been seeing a ton of people clamoring for a 14″ MBP, hoping that when Apple updates its smaller Macbook Pro with the new Magic Keyboard, they should also bump the screen up to 14″, like they did with the 15″ going to 16″. I think this is unlikely to happen and would be a mistake if it did. Here’s why:
The screen on the 15″ MBP was actually **15.4** inches. By shrinking the bezels, and increasing the overall footprint of the machine just a bit, Apple was able to just eke out a 16″ screen. For their biggest, most powerful laptop, this compromise made sense. People buying the largest laptop care less about the size of the body, and the increase in the size of the footprint was small relative to the overall size of the machine.
The screen on the 13″ MBP is actually **13.3** inches. Just shrinking the bezels on the existing body would leave them a ways off from 14″. Apple would need to *significantly increase the case size* to hit 14″, and that increase in case size would be significant relative to the overall size of the laptop. For their more portable Macbook Pro, this increase would not make sense.
I’d personally rather have a ~13.8″ screen with tiny bezels in the existing case than a chunkier laptop with a 14″ screen. Making the case significantly larger really defeats this model’s purpose in the lineup, and you can squeeze a *significantly larger screen* into the existing body if you’re not worried about hitting an arbitrary 14″ number.
I’m personally in the market for a new laptop, and if the 13″ stays the same overall size as before, I’ll probably get it, but if it’s significantly bigger, I might go with a Macbook Air. Having a pro laptop in a smaller size is really great!
What do you all think?
